middeleeuwse karakter is goed bewaard gebleven. er komen veel pelgrims in assisi
ter nagedachtenis van st.-franciscus, die hier geboren is. reeds jong schonk hij
zijn bezittingen aan de armen en trok zich als kluizenaar terug. later ging hij
prediken en schreef een levensregel, de basis voor de franciscanenorde. clara
die zich bij hem aansloot stichtte de orde van de clarissen
